Car Accidents Involving Distracted Pedestrians

Recent reports show pedestrian fatalities are on the rise.

Often times, when we think about distractions in relation to car accidents, we think about drivers who may be talking or texting on their cell phone, adjusting the radio, or eating. These are all common distractions that have the potential to cause a devastating accident. However, in the technological age in which we live, it is not only drivers who are using their electronic devices. Recent reports show there is an increase in pedestrian fatalities, often as the result of pedestrians being distracted by mobile devices.

When people decide to go for a walk, run, or bike ride, it is not unusual for them to listen to music on their smartphone or mp3 player. Some claim this helps them to focus, pass the time, and block out the city noise. Unfortunately, using these devices may also cause a pedestrian to become inattentive to their surroundings.

A recent report published by Ohio State University claims that an estimated 1,500 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms in 2010 for injuries related to cell phone use while walking. Not surprisingly, young people ages 16 to 25 were most likely to be injured. The study went on to relate, however, that most were hurt while talking on their cell phone, rather than texting. This is noteworthy because it shows how dangerous being inattentive to one’s surrounds can be.

Drivers must remain constantly alert in order to avoid causing an accident. The same is true for pedestrians. If pedestrians are inattentive to their surroundings, the potential for a fatal accident increases significantly. Moreover, a pedestrian involved in a car accident will likely suffer severe injuries and possibly death.

In order to contribute to safer roadways, it is important that both drivers and pedestrians do their part to limit distractions.
