A side impact collision can cause serious, even catastrophic, injuries due to the violent nature of these types of car accidents.
Also known as a t-bone accident, side impact collisions are one of the most dangerous types of car accidents a driver or passenger can be involved in. Victims of a side impact collision often experience serious and life-threatening injuries due to the fact that the persons involved feel the direct impact of the other vehicle.
What is a Side Impact Collision?
Side-impact car accidents are those where the collision takes place on the side of the car. These accidents most often happen when negligent drivers change lanes or make turns without checking for oncoming traffic. The sides of a car, unlike the front, are not as well protected by the car’s airbags. When another vehicle collides with the front of the car, the engine creates enough space between the passengers and the colliding vehicle. However, in a side impact collision, there is not much protection between the passenger and the colliding vehicle apart from glass and the thin metal of the door.
Side impact car accidents often cause catastrophic injuries to the spine and head, internal organs, and can even result in death.
Efforts to Reduce Side Impact Collision Injuries
Car manufacturers have gone to great efforts to equip their vehicles with side-impact air bags (SABs). These have been designed to protect a person in the event of a serious accident involving the side of the vehicle.
There are 3 main types of SABs. The first is to protect the chest or torso. These are mounted in the side of the seat or in the door. The second is designed to protect a person’s head. These are generally mounted in the roof rail above the side windows. The third set are made to protect the head and chest. Because they need to protect the combined area of both of these parts of the body, these SABs are typically larger than the chest SABs but are also usually mounted in the side of the seat.
Prevention of a Side Impact Collision
While the invention of side-impact air bags has helped in reducing the injuries, nothing can protect a person from injury like that of avoiding a side impact collision altogether. One should be extremely cautious while driving to try and ensure that they avoid being in a car accident. Simple measures like looking both ways before proceeding through an intersection, may help in the prevention of side impact accidents.
However, accidents do happen, and we can only be prepared in advance by taking precautions.
- Ensure your car has side-impact air bags
- Make sure that you and your passengers always wear seat belts
- Make sure your children are in proper safety seats
