A man was arrested on August 19 for leaving the scene of a hit and run accident that resulted in a fatality.
Police had stopped the man, suspecting he was driving drunk, very soon after the man allegedly struck a pedestrian with his vehicle and then drove away. The body of the pedestrian was found in the middle of the road, according to the police report.
Failing to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident are both considered forms of negligence and are unacceptable under Missouri law. Leaving the scene of an accident when someone else is seriously injured or has died is illegal. Drunk driving and hit and run accidents often go hand in hand. Judgment is already compromised by being intoxicated, and people will sometimes make the decision to flee instead of doing the responsible thing and staying at the scene of the accident. Many commit this crime for fear of being charged with drunk driving, but instead run the risk of being charged with the additional offense of fleeing the scene.
The accident happened early on Monday, August 19. The driver allegedly struck the pedestrian with his vehicle and then failed to stop and render aid. When he was stopped later on suspicion of drunk driving and failed a sobriety and breathalyzer test, he also admitted to hitting the man earlier. He told police that he had been aware of the accident and knowingly left the scene.
Drunk driving accidents can cause devastating losses for victims and their families. Accident victims should contact a Missouri car accident attorney to discuss legal options. Hit and run accidents where the driver is unknown are even more complicated. You should contact an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you to investigate and pursue compensation. Drunk driving is absolutely unacceptable and puts all other drivers and pedestrians at risk.
