An accident in Warren County last Tuesday night left five people injured, including a pedestrian.
The accident involved three vehicles and the five injured individuals were all hospitalized.
According to authorities, Jennifer Graves, 32, was in a vehicle as a passenger heading eastbound on Township Line Rd. near Highway 47. Around 9:30 p.m. the driver noticed an accident and stopped on the side of the road to see if anybody needed help.
Graves got out of the car as another vehicle, a minivan, stopped behind her vehicle. A pickup truck that was behind the minivan crashed into the minivan, which struck the car Graves had just gotten out of. Graves was hit by the car which was slammed into her by the minivan. She was struck into the pavement by the vehicle and seriously injured. She was airlifted to Mercy Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle Graves was in sustained moderate injuries and was treated at the hospital.
The driver of the minivan, Deborah Hughes, was also seriously injured. She was transported to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur as well.
There were two teenagers in the pickup truck and they were taken to the hospital also, but only sustained minor injuries.
The Missouri Highway Patrol Statistical Analysis Center reported that in 2010 there was a total of 151,353 auto accidents. In these accidents 54,875 people sustained injuries, and there were 821 fatalities. This amounts to one person becoming injured in a traffic accident every 9.6 minutes in 2010. These statistics are alarming.
These accidents were caused by a variety of factors, according to the Analysis Center. These factors included drinking, texting, speeding, and inexperienced driving. Sixty-four percent of these accidents were caused by one moving vehicle striking another moving vehicle. Careless and distracted driving were significant causes of traffic crashes, and these will only continue to increase as drivers add more multitasking activities while driving.
Not all accidents are caused by careless or distracted drivers. Many accidents are caused by roadways that are not properly maintained. Weather can contribute, as can roadways that are poorly designed. Signs that are confusing or traffic signals that are broken or hard to see, can also contribute to the likelihood of a crash. In some of these cases the fault may lie with the city, the county, or the state.
