Three Lee’s Summit Teens Hospitalized After Car Accident

A single vehicle accident on September 12 left three teens recovering in the hospital.

The accident happened in the S.W. Hook Road and S.W. Market Street area around 2:20 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene they found that the teens’ 2005 Dodge Neon had apparently struck a tree. The teens, all Lee’s Summit students, had left Summit Ridge Academy and were westbound on Hood Road.

The driver was a 16-year-old girl from Lee’s Summit. She had sustained serious injuries and needed to be airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. There were two other passengers in the vehicle, a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old female of Lee’s Summit. The 17-year-old female was taken to a hospital via ground ambulance and the other passenger was airlifted. Both had sustained serious injuries.

An investigation is ongoing and police have yet to determine a cause. But so far police have been able to determine that the driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver attempted to regain control of the vehicle, veering back onto the road, but once again lost control. The Dodge Neon went off the road again, this time striking a tree.

A passerby saw the accident wreckage and immediately called the police just minutes after the accident took place. Firefighters arrived at the scene and had to cut the roof off of the vehicle in order to extricate the teens and get them medical treatment.

Police are working on finding out what initially caused the driver to lose control, but so far no citations have been issued.
