Proper Adjustment of Your Car’s Side Mirrors

Despite your best efforts, accidents can still happen. Contact The Hoffmann Law Firm today if you or someone you know has been injured in an accident.

It’s not something most of us think about daily, but properly adjusting your car’s view mirrors is crucial to safe driving. Proper mirror adjustment can help you avoid blind spots and make seeing vehicles in adjacent lanes easier. So how do you adjust your mirrors correctly? Below, we provide tips on adjusting your mirrors and using them effectively while driving.

Step #1: Sit in the Driver’s Seat

One of the most critical steps in adjusting your mirrors is to sit in the driver’s seat. This will give you the best vantage point to see how much of your car is visible in the mirrors. It’s also essential to make sure that you are sitting comfortably to reach the mirrors easily. If you are not comfortable, you may find it difficult to adjust the mirrors correctly.

Step #2: Familiarize Yourself With the Controls

Once you are seated, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the controls for the mirrors. Most cars will have a knob or lever located near the mirror itself that can be used to adjust the angle. There may also be a button that allows you to tilt the mirror up or down in some cases.

Step #3: Adjust the Rear-View Mirror

Once you’re seated comfortably, it’s time to adjust the mirrors. Adjust the rear-view mirror first. The angle of the rear-view mirror should allow you to see the entire rear window. If you need to lean forward or sit up higher to see out the back window, the mirror is angled too low. To adjust the angle of the mirror, twist it until you can see the entire rear window.

Step #4: Adjust the Driver’s Side Mirror First

Next, adjust the driver’s side mirror by moving the switch up, down, left or right until you see the back of your car in the mirror. You may need to lean over a bit to get the perfect angle. The image in the mirror should be as small as possible while still giving you a clear view of what’s behind you.

Step #5: Adjust the Passenger’s Side Mirror

Once you’ve adjusted the driver’s side mirror, move on to the passenger’s side mirror. Again, start by moving the mirror until you can see the edge of your car.

Step #6: Check Your Mirrors One Last Time

Finally, check both mirrors to ensure they’re positioned correctly. Also, make sure your mirrors are not showing the same view. If your mirrors duplicate each other, it can cause problems. First, it can create blind spots in your field of vision. Second, it can make it more difficult to judge distances. Finally, it can be confusing and distracting.

Now that you know how to adjust and use your car’s view mirrors properly, it’s essential to practice these skills. By following these six simple steps, you can ensure you’re using your mirrors correctly and keeping yourself and others safe while on the road.
