On Wednesday, September 11, in St. Louis, Missouri, a crash on northbound U.S. 61, near the Interstate 70 split, was fatal for two individuals. The accident occurred in Wentzville around 4:00 p.m.

It appears that neither of the two men involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

Sgt. Kerry Potter of the Missouri Highway Patrol has had some success making sense of the crash but has stated that it is still unclear why one driver failed to maintain control of his car and crossed over the median, slamming into the pickup truck. The car was headed southbound on 61 on the inside lane. He lost control at some point, however, and drove across the 60 foot wide grass median separating the lanes, and into the path of a northbound pickup truck, which he hit head on.

After the accident Northbound 61 needed to be closed for almost four hours. Traffic was backed up for almost three miles.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene and firefighters who responded to the accident needed to extricate their bodies from the wreckage.

No one else was injured in the accident and neither vehicle had any other passengers. There was a third vehicle that was affected in the crash and was damaged, but the driver was uninjured. The vehicle was struck by flying debris as the crash happened.

Firefighters and the towing crews that were called to the scene needed to work on clearing the debris from the roadways. It looks like in the intense impact the vehicles practically exploded. Sgt. Potter said,

From eyewitness statements, they were going around the speed limit, so about 60 mph, each… no seat belts were used in this accident. The median here is about 60 feet wide. If it was narrow like the one on 70 there would probably a median cable in there for this type of accident.”
